.22cal ?
Ok everyone is probably set when it comes to .22cal LR rounds but the question is does anyone stock up on .22 cal subsonics or .22 cal CB's and choice of L , LR , Short as well as which maker is best when it comes to them as far as velocity and impact?

Re: .22cal ?
I stock up on CCI's in the CB and Short loads for my trapline revolver.

Re: .22cal ?
You have to get some of these... I got them first and then the revolver to shoot them with --

Aquila Sniper Sub-Sonic 60 gr. are accurate and penetrate deeply... CCI .22 Short HP--Beretta Minx, etc. also fairly quiet out of a rifle. Don't know about actual velocity and terminal performance comparisons... For that check out: http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/ |
Re: .22cal ?
Just get the lowest cost, major brand .22LR they will probably be high velocity....great! MORE ENERGY! Why bother with lower velocity? They may be a bit more quiet...but that is of little use. .22LR is pretty quiet out of a rifle....they are all pretty loud out of handguns.
What is your intended use? A barter unit? Survival rounds. Hunting... Just get a bunch - it will never cost less than right now. I'm hoarding for my kids....many cases. |
Re: .22cal ?
the Remington subsonic (.22 Long Rifle) are really nice. very consistent, full weight 40 grain, relatively quiet from a rifle they sond about like a loud hand clap.

Re: .22cal ?
I've not liked the Rem sub, but the Aguila/PMC moderator have been good for me. I have a bolter w/ a flashlight and dot unit just for subs. Bye bye doggies.
FWIW- I bought a Benjamin Discovery and hardly shoot anything else any more. Squirrels and chucks outmumber feral dogs around me....well NOW they do....;) |
Re: .22cal ?
I shoot CCI subsonic in a 1940's Single Shot Winchester Bolt Action. I really dig their plastic suspended trays that can be reloaded with larger loose boxes of .22 LR. I originally used the subsonic to minimize wear and tear on the relic of a gun. As it is I enjoy very low SPL shooting with it.
I recently acquired a Ruger 10/22 through which I have been fitfully running Remington high-velocity round lead HP. It tends to "smiley" against the chamber bore. I switched to Blazer high-velocity round lead solid (what the gun shop threw in with the rifle purchase) with more success but the Butler Creek 25/22 magazine didn't want to feed it very well. I learned that the inside of a 10/22 receiver is painted and the bolt will, of course, shred this paint thereby causing retarded bolt travel (stovepiping) as well as dropping paint shavings into the magazine. After cleaning the inside of the receiver of all the paint and washing the magazines I have yet to go and experiment with the rifle in optimum condition. I will be trying some copper jacketed rounds to see if they might feed into the bore better. I suspect I may have to file away part of the entry to correct the feeding issue entirely.. |
